Silence

A poem

We are listening to silence
Well up in our
Regular spaces.

Deserted streets,
Shuttered shops,
Vacant parks,
Barren working spaces,
Closed malls,
Empty schools,
A sudden void in our daily lives.

We can’t live without noise
We can’t live with silence.

Our rhythm of living
With chaos
Stands disrupted.

The silence outside
Threatens to
Reach us within.

We are wary
Of listening to these silences
Within.

What will they throw up?
Our mindless chase
After wealth and power

What will they throw up?
Our heartless destruction
Of Mother Nature

What will they throw up?
Our inoculation
To the suffering poor

What will they throw up?
Our insensitivity
To those we love

What will they throw up?
Our self — centred
Narcissism

What will they throw up?
Our shallow
Hollow lives

We yearn for the comfort
Of the din and dust of
Our daily routine.
